Fluoride is a very important mineral that nourishes and strengthens your smile every day. As the minutes go by, minerals are added to and lost from your teeth, which is called demineralization and remineralization. However, there are times when your smile is more demineralized than remineralized, and it can allow the bacteria in your mouth to begin the process of tooth decay, which is why fluoride is so important. If you use fluoride products each day, like fluoride toothpaste or fluoride mouthwash, those lost minerals are replaced and your smile is again protected from tooth decay.
Fluoride comes in many forms, like fluoride toothpaste, fluoride gummies, fluoride water, tap water, fluoride mouthwash, fluoride tablets, and fluoride dental treatments. When you come into our office for a dental cleaning, we will give you a fluoride treatment that will come in the form of a foam, gel, or varnish. Foam fluoride treatments are presented in a mouth guard-like appliance that is placed over your teeth for a few minutes. As you wait, the fluoride will soak into your teeth. Varnish fluoride treatments are painted onto your teeth. Gel fluoride treatments can be painted on your teeth or applied with a mouth guard.
It is very important that children ages 6 months to 16 years old are exposed to fluoride. This is because the permanent teeth need to be strengthened and nourished before and after they erupt. It is also helpful if adults use fluoride treatments because the fluoride helps prevent tooth decay.
