There are a few different things that can cause a toothache. The most common cause is severe tooth decay that is compromising the sensitive interior of the tooth. However, there are also less obvious things that could be causing your toothache.

Regardless of the underlying cause, a toothache is a dental emergency that should not be taken lightly.

If the toothache is associated with a traumatic event, like a hard fall or a blow to the face, it likely damaged some internal structures of the tooth. Sometimes this can happen without any outward signs of damage to the enamel layer of the tooth.

Most toothaches are related to some form of tooth decay. At our dental practice, we can address the decayed tooth with a filling, crown or root canal to prevent further complications. If left unchecked, it could develop an abscess or other serious infections in the gums.

While you’re waiting to see your dentist, Dr. Thomas Bell, you can mitigate some of the toothache pain by rubbing your gums with a topical oral analgesic. If the toothache was caused by trauma and there is swelling in your lip or cheek, you can hold a cold compress to your face for 15 minutes at a time.
